Why is my mini split running but not cooling properly?

A mini split that runs but doesn’t cool usually has restricted airflow, incorrect controls, low refrigerant, dirty heat‑exchange surfaces, or a drainage issue. The most common cause we see is clogged filters or coils reducing heat transfer and airflow. Our technicians see this often across Western New York homes and fix it with cleaning, calibrating controls, and checking refrigerant and fans.

Before you call, try these quick checks:

  • Set the thermostat to Cool (not Fan or Dry) and lower the setpoint.
  • Clean or rinse the indoor unit’s washable filters.
  • Clear obstructions around indoor and outdoor units to improve airflow.
  • Close windows and doors in the cooled space.

If these steps don’t help, a professional tune‑up can clean coils, flush the condensate drain, verify refrigerant charge, and test the fan motor and blades. If your system is newer, repair is typical; replacement is considered when major leaks or repeated failures appear. If simple checks fail, book maintenance before running the unit hard.
