Why is my thermostat not turning on heat?

A thermostat won’t turn on heat when it lacks power, is set incorrectly, or can’t communicate with the furnace. The most common issue is a control that isn’t actually calling for heat because of mode, schedule, or temperature settings. Other causes include tripped power or wiring faults, furnace safety lockouts, or a short built‑in delay after changes. Our technicians often see miswired replacements in the greater Akron area, especially after a DIY swap.

Try these quick checks:

  • If the screen is blank, replace the batteries or check the HVAC breaker.
  • Set Heat mode, disable Hold/Vacation if active, and raise the setpoint well above room temperature.
  • Confirm the furnace switch is on and the blower door is seated; many units won’t run if the door switch is open.
  • If the thermostat shows an equipment fault or heat starts then stops, schedule service.

When in doubt, turn the system off and call a licensed pro to avoid shorting low‑voltage wiring.
