Why Is My AC Running But Not Blowing Cold Air?

An AC that runs but isn’t blowing cold air usually has an airflow restriction or a refrigerant/compressor problem. The most common cause is a dirty air filter that blocks the indoor coil, so air moves but doesn’t cool. Other frequent issues include a frozen evaporator coil, a tripped outdoor unit, low refrigerant from a leak, or a failed capacitor that prevents the compressor from starting. Our technicians often see this right after the first hot spell when systems have sat idle. We routinely handle fast diagnostics and repairs across AC and heat pump systems in the Amherst area. Members of our Comfy for Life program avoid trip/diagnostic charges and have repairs covered.

Try these safe checks before scheduling service:

  • Set the thermostat to Cool and Auto, then lower the setpoint 3–5 degrees.
  • Make sure the outdoor unit is running and clear leaves within 2 feet.
  • Check the breaker for the outdoor unit and reset once if tripped.
  • If you suspect ice, turn the system off for 30 minutes, then retry cooling.

If you see ice on the refrigerant lines or the outdoor unit is silent, turn the system off and schedule a professional inspection to prevent damage.
